The West Market of Xian, one of the oldest markets in China, has been rebuilt. It is located in the capital of the Northwest Shaanxi Province, Xian. 1300 years ago, the market was a thriving shopping facility on an area as big as 2 city wards. The market was split into 9 parts, and it was always bustling with vendors offering all kinds of wares.

These included taverns, wine shops, pastries, gruel, cereals, and a Persian bazaar. The government offices were also housed in the complex, as was a safety deposit company. One of the main reasons for rebuilding this historical site is to give visitors some insight into the Tang Dynasty which ruled from 618 to 907 AD.

These were very prosperous years in China’s history, mainly due to flourishing trade on the Silk Road with foreign countries. At the end of the Tang reign, the Silk Road was cut off and trade ceased. However, part of the re-birth of the market includes the reconnection of the Silk Road.

At that time, Xian was known as Chang’an. It was one of the world’s most notable cities with a population exceeding 1 million. In the years preceding the Tang Dynasty, the market was divided into two parts – east and west. The locals shopped in the east part, while the west part was more focused on visitors.

During the Tang Dynasty, a number of cultural exchange programs were initiated in Chang’an, most of which involved foreign students participating in study programs. Friendly relations were also fostered with Arabic countries and, as a result, China acquired precious stones and food items. The imposing sculptures and murals at Mogao Caves were crafted in the Tang Dynasty.

The West Market covers an enormous area. Costs for rebuilding amounted to 3.5 billion Yuan which translates to $460 million. Two phases of development took place. The first houses antique and souvenir shops, reception facilities for visitors, a museum, restaurants and a supermarket. This phase was finished in 2008. The total area is 660,000 square meters.

The second phase, which is near completion, focuses on the culture and heritage of the old Silk Road. Visitors will get a fascinating glimpse into the past and learn how the Chinese made giant strides in science, printing, medicine, and astronomy. There are also residential apartments and office blocks on this large area of 620,000 square meters.

Xian has enjoyed a fast-growing economy, and it is still one of the most significant cities in north western China. The reconstruction of the West Market offers great shopping facilities and, for those who are into Chinese culture, there are hundreds of items on offer. From calligraphy rubbings and Tang pottery, to green porcelain and folk paintings, it’s all here.

Statistics show that, up until now, tourists stay in Xian for an average of 2.9 days and spend only $180. With the opening of the refurbished West Market of Xian, these figures are expected to increase significantly.
