Lymington – Hampshire is a small town on the southern coast of England that is very close to the New Forest District. It is also close to the Isle of Wight and gets a great deal of tourism trade because of it. There is a ferry that regularly shuttles cars between the island and the mainland.
Often this town attracts wealthier tourists. With the sea and the large forest area so close to each other, those with the funds and the desire to participate in outdoor events will find themselves right at home. Yachting and sailing are two of the biggest attractions here. For those not so keen on sports, there is plenty of shopping to be had.
To maintain these standards and keep up the tourism trade, the town has had to rigorously stay on top of all aesthetic and functional facets. There is an extremely good transportation system. The crime rate is very low and the area is quiet; in fact, many retirement homes are situated in the area. Older houses that were not up to code have been demolished and affordable, attractive apartment housing was put in its place.
Scholars would like it, too, since there is an Iron Age fort in the area. There is plenty to study, since it was also an Anglo-Saxon town with a Jute population. After the English reclaimed the area, it became very valuable for its natural salt deposits. Salt made for very good trade, since it was almost the only thing common people had available to season their food. Other spices were too expensive. Salt was also very commonly used to preserve foods before iceboxes were invented.
Despite the wealth of the town, residents and businesses do everything they can in order to keep it quaint and untainted. Many of the streets are still cobblestone or brick. There are valuable old houses that are well-maintained. Many legends about the town are promoted, including ghost stories and tales of smugglers. Most of these have been proven to be unfounded, but they make for good business in tours.
This town has some of the best sailing in the world–so good that world championships are often held there. It is great for those who love spectator sports, especially because the sailing is so difficult. Many find the races to be extremely exciting. Every Thursday night in the summer, locals race their own boats as a fun tradition.
The town thrives on outdoor activity. There are dozens of different areas to play golf, swim, and race. Many clubs devoted to boating have formed here. There are tons of sports fields and skate parks. There is only one small theatre and library, though, so scholars and artists may find themselves at a loss for diversion.
