Guidelines When Tagging Along Dogs On Family Boating

Dog owners who are especially close to their pets may want to take Fido along when they go boating. And if you could ask Fido’s opinion he would probably agree, as dogs hate being left behind.

Taking a dog boating is not as difficult as it sounds. Most dogs do great on boats and enjoy the experience. Having a dog on a boat is a fine choice so long as you are prepared ahead of time.

1. Make the boat dog-proof. You need to protect the dog from harm so check for any items that could hurt the animal.

All gear should also be stowed, as should anything sharp, in the correct container. Fishing hooks are especially dangerous. You also want to protect the boat from the dog. Look around for items the dog could disturb or break, and put these items away safely.

2. Designate a specific potty area: You can be low-tech, and use taped- or weighted-down newspapers to show the dog where to do its business, or if you prefer you can purchase a special boating setup from your local pet store. It is also a good idea to make sure that the dog goes to the bathroom before you set out. Be sure also to bring plastic bags and a trash container so that you can clean up after the dog.

3. Have adequate supplies for the dog: Your dog will consume more water than you think it will, especially if the day is hot and sunny. Your dog does not have to have a full bowl of water continually available, but it should be offered water every half hour or thereabouts. Bring a bowl for water, and more water than you think they dog will need.

Have plenty of food as well. Your dog should be fed as often as needed.

4. Get a doggie floatation device: These items are easy to find. You can buy them at pet stores, in boating supply stores, online, etc. Choose a style that has a handle on the back, as this makes it easier to pull the dog out of the water if it goes overboard.

Besides boating trips, the writer also regularly publishes information about guitar stools and fender acoustic guitar strap.
